Overview
One of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus, the Kedarnath Jyotirlinga is nestled amidst the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and holds immense spiritual significance as part of the Char Dham Yatra. Located at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 ft), this ancient temple is accessible only for six months a year due to extreme weather conditions.
Mythological Significance
According to Hindu mythology, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought redemption for killing their kin and Brahmins. They traveled to Kashi but couldn’t find Lord Shiva. Disguised as a bull, Shiva tried to avoid them and fled to the Himalayas. When the Pandavas recognized him, Shiva dived into the ground. His hump surfaced at Kedarnath, and the rest of his body appeared in different places, forming the Panch Kedar.
Lord Shiva then forgave the Pandavas and granted them moksha (liberation). Thus, Kedarnath became a place of supreme penance and devotion.

Temple Architecture
The Kedarnath Temple is built using massive stone slabs, in the Katyuri-style of architecture. The temple stands without mortar, and its construction has withstood the test of time and nature — including the catastrophic 2013 flash floods, which damaged much of the surrounding town but left the shrine mostly intact.
A large Nandi bull statue guards the entrance, and inside lies the conical stone lingam — the primary object of worship.
