Overview
The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is one of the most revered of the twelve Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. This sacred shrine holds a unique distinction — it is the only Dakshinamukhi (south-facing) Jyotirlinga, symbolizing victory over death and time. Mythological Significance
As per legend, Ujjain was once ruled by King Chandrasena, a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. A demon named Dushana attacked the city, and when Shiva’s devotee Shrikhar prayed to the Lord for help, Shiva appeared in a fierce form and destroyed the demon. He then took the form of Mahakaal and decided to stay in Ujjain permanently to protect his devotees. Hence, the temple came to be known as Mahakaleshwar.
Another tale from the Puranas describes how Lord Shiva manifested as a Jyotirlinga at Ujjain to bless his devotees and rule over time itself.
Spiritual Importance
The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is regarded as a Swayambhu Lingam (self-manifested), unlike other Jyotirlingas installed by human hands. It is believed that this lingam derives power (shakti) from within, making it highly spiritually potent.
