Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga – Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh

Overview

The Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, located in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh, is one of the most revered twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Nestled in the lush Nallamala Hills, this sacred temple is not only a pilgrimage center but also a destination of stunning natural beauty. It is unique because it is one of the rare temples where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are both worshipped together.

Mythological Significance

According to Shiva Purana, when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati decided to get their sons Ganesha and Kartikeya married, a disagreement arose about who should be married first. To resolve this, they proposed a challenge: whoever circled the world first would be wed first.

While Kartikeya set off on his peacock to travel the world, Ganesha simply circled his parents, stating that they were his entire universe. Impressed, Shiva and Parvati married Ganesha to Siddhi and Buddhi.

When Kartikeya returned and learned what had happened, he was upset and went to Krauncha Mountain to live alone. To console him, Lord Shiva and Parvati visited the mountain. It is believed they manifested there as Arjuna (Shiva) and Mallika (Parvati), giving rise to the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga.

Spiritual Importance

The temple is considered both a Jyotirlinga and one of the Shakti Peethas, making it extremely sacred for both Shaivites and Shaktas. It is believed that a visit to this shrine grants liberation from sins and the cycle of rebirth.

Temple Architecture

The Mallikarjuna Temple is a fine example of South Indian Dravidian architecture. The Rajagopuram (main tower) is adorned with intricate carvings of deities and mythological scenes. The sanctum sanctorum houses the Shiva Lingam (Mallikarjuna) and an idol of Goddess Parvati (Bhramaramba).

The temple complex also contains many smaller shrines, pillared halls, and inscriptions dating back to the 12th century, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
