Overview
The Somnath Jyotirlinga, located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Gujarat, is the first and foremost among the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Known as the “Eternal Shrine,” it has a long and tumultuous history marked by destruction and rebirth, symbolizing the timeless spirit of devotion and resilience in Sanatan Dharma.
Mythological Significance
According to legend, the Moon God (Chandra) was married to the 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati. However, he showed favoritism toward Rohini, which angered Daksha. As a result, Daksha cursed Chandra to lose his radiance. Chandra then worshipped Lord Shiva at this spot to regain his luminosity. Pleased by his devotion, Shiva appeared as a Jyotirlinga and partially lifted the curse. Hence, the place became known as Somnath (“Lord of the Moon”).
Historical Legacy
Somnath Temple has been destroyed and rebuilt several times by various invaders:
- First built in gold by the Moon God.
- Then rebuilt in silver by Ravana, in wood by Krishna, and in stone by King Bhimdev.
- The temple was famously destroyed by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1025 AD.
- It has since been rebuilt by Hindu kings and most recently reconstructed in 1951 under the vision of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Architectural Highlights
The present-day temple is a magnificent example of Chalukya-style architecture, characterized by its majestic pillars, intricate carvings, and gold-plated spire. The temple faces the Arabian Sea, and an arrow pillar known as “Baan Stambh” points in a straight line that shows there is no landmass between Somnath and Antarctica.
